3. What do you get when you mix Talking Heads ‘Psycho Killer’ with Dr Feelgood’s ‘Roxette’ and chuck in a Blockheads-esque vocal? The intro to Southend on Sea outfit Eight Rounds Rapid track ‘My Mate’ which was the first track of theirs I’d heard and it got me hooked.

So it was with some interest that news came into the kennel they’re releasing a new single and vinyl debut and it’s a limited edition 7” vinyl release (500 copies) - and the only format that ‘Writeabout’ will ever be available on. The flip side Steve is a crowd pleaser and fan favourite.

It’s a menacing rock ‘n’ rolla floor filler in the same vein as The Damned or the aforementioned Feelgoods (Eight Rounds Rapid supported legendary Wilko Johnson on his farewell tour) coming at you full on with post-punk ferocity. It’s just plain nasty!

With no small amount of accolades and plays from the likes of 6 Music’s Mark Radcliffe, Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq. BBC Radio London’s Gary Crowley and Podrophenia on whose label they’ve now signed and released the single. Looks like we’ll have to give them a spin on Ralph’s Radio KC Indie Show.

  10. You can buy our 12” single from Norman Records.

"Saw Eight Rounds Rapid in a flurry of blood from the guitarists right hand at Koko in March. Utterly fantastic. ‘Writeabout’ certainly one of their best and enough to make me get the required Visa and inoculations to travel from North Essex down to Southend for the single launch. Bought it. Love it."

One of the best singles of the past few years and quite simply the best live band on the circuit at the moment 8RR rip it up with aplomb. Driving drums and bass coupled with roaring guitars and David Alexander’s excellent lyrics and vocals this is a band you just have to hear.”

Tired of the sloppy, sickly, pop that pretends to be alternative music? 8RR are the antidote. Sharp and incisive post punk infused with the energy of Dr Feelgood’s estuary DNA, this pair of songs showcase 8RR’s destiny as the future of English rock n roll!”

  12. Bully boy with soft toy. What is he like?

  14. Recently receiving acclaim on BBC 6music from both Steve Lamacq and Gideon Coe, Southend’s rising stars, Eight Rounds Rapid, have just released their new double a-side single and vinyl debut – ‘Writeabout/Steve’. Having supported the inspirational Wilko Johnson on his March ‘Farewell’ tour, with a particularly memorable show at London’s Koko, this provocative new rock band are certainly one to keep your ears out for. With just 500 copies of this limited edition run of the band’s first seven inch single released, it’s quite an exciting time for Eight Rounds Rapid, and for anyone who is lucky enough to get their hands on one of these special recordings.

Although impossible to pigeon-hole into any one genre, the impressive songs that are blasted out by this band are punk-infused reminders that real music is not dead. At the same time, however, despite the venomous, angst-filled sound that Eight Rounds Rapid generate, they have also proved themselves to be skilled lyrical story tellers – as vocalist, David Alexander, has poetically said of the band: “Every song is a story, some seen through a kaleidoscope”.

With a shot of post-punk buzz, pounding drums, and rapid, impassioned lyrics, ‘Writeabout’ is a fast-paced, anthemic storm of a song, whilst ‘Steve’ is filled with climatic, groovy riffs delivered charismatically by Simon Johnson (yes, Wilko’s son), and a strong, pumping bass line. In other words, both sides of this release are fantastically unique – an exciting cacophony of sound that should not pass you by.
